El Tonayense

I’ve been puzzled by why these El Tonayense trucks are so popular. They aren’t very good, but yet they are everywhere, and people claim to like them. It’s not that they are bad so much as they are just extremely boring. From what I can tell, there ain’t no love in them tacos and burritos. Yet, again and again, I hear about how great they are.
The only reason I can think of is that San Francisco is full of transplants, and these transplants must consider taco trucks a novelty. They order, they eat, and then the pretend to love whatever they had. I’m guessing these fakers are doing it so they can boast some sort of street food street cred, although these creations might have a tough time stacking up against Chipotle.
I haven’t been to the Best Buy taco truck since El Tonayense bought out the Cuban guy who used to serve from there. Having had Tonayense burritos before, I knew not to expect anything special. However, a shopping spree for an Xbox coincided with a craving of burrito, and I knew I had to give it another go. With new video game console in hand, I knew I had better feed myself before I dove in.
So, after making a beeline through the big-box store, purchase in hand, I stopped at the truck for a grilled chicken burrito. Six bucks, no chips, no salsa. Lame. However, I knew what I was getting into; I had no expectations. I put the small tube of a burrito in a bag and headed home. I could tell by the heft of the thing there was not gonna be any leftovers.
When I got home and tore into the burrito, I was not pleasantly surprised. It was exactly what I had expected: A utilitarian burrito that offered no thrills and only basic sustenance. The grilled chicken was bland and slightly rubbery. The beans were lifeless, along with the rice. Portions were meek with cheese and sour cream apparently hiding, as was the guacamole. Quite the lameness in the distribution of goods.
I knew what I was getting into, so I wasn’t surprised. I had hoped on the off-chance Tonayense had stepped up their act, but with a cult of followers claiming deliciousness, they have no reason to change. People: Just because they are everywhere, does not mean they are good.
The Xbox however, was great.
