Taqueria La Sierra lies hidden down a nondescript side street off what seemed to be the main drag in Antioch. Housed in what was probably an old burger joint, the first thing you notice is all the signs in the window. It can be overwhelming at first, and Cory and I both ended up ordering the same thing. Wanting the most variety for a meal, we both got three different tacos: al pastor, chicken and carne asada. Out of the ‘big three’ certainly at least one would be delicious.

Turns out all three were spectacular. The chicken was probably my favorite, with the carne asada a close second. That is not to say the al pastor was no good; it certainly was. The juiciness of the chicken formed a perfect ratio of meat to tortilla. Served street style, each taco had two tortillas. I always think of this as one tortilla to hold the meat, the other to keep the juice from dripping down your arm. It was perfect; juicy enough to be dripping with flavor yet firm enough to easily grasp.

As for the meat itself, all three were clearly prepared with care. The carne asada appeared to have been pounded thin before being marinated and then quickly cooked. The bite-sized pieces were tender and practically delicate. The result was an incredibly succulent taco. The chicken was stewed in a red sauce which seemed to permeate the fowl all the way through. Pure deliciousness. The al pastor taco was certainly good, but not memorable. Not greasy as al pastor can tend to be, the taco had a fair amount of crispness and served as a good contrast to the tender steak and juicy chicken.

It’s been about a month since my first visit to Taqueria La Sierra, but I still can’t wait to go back. No small factor in the experience is the fact that the family running the place was friendly and accommodating. It is always apparent when food is prepared with some thought and care, and the tacos at La Sierra clearly had some soul. Recently the scene of a shooting, I wish them the best. This family deserves your attention and your business.
