I like ham. I like cheese. I like rolled tacos. How could I not like ham and cheese taquitos?

One day, while cruising around with Greg looking for something to do, we walked by that taco cart on Mission at S. Van Ness. They were closing up for the day, but while there we checked out the menu. Although I have spent a good amount of time reading Mexican food menus, it’s not uncommon for me to still come across something new. That’s part of the beauty of Mexican food. It is versatile; all the ingredients are there, they just need to be put together. Usually however, the names, while vaguely descriptive, still need some amount of deciphering. Not so in this case. Under the common heading of Taquitos was a description I had never come across before.

“3 Crispy Ham and Cheese Tacos, Lettuce, Sweet Salsa, Guacamole, Sour Cream”

What the hell was this?

Super Taqueria – The Missing Link

It has always been confusing to me that there is great Mexican food in San Diego, and great Mexican food in San Francisco, yet how both styles can be totally different, I never quite understood. Minor differences in tortillas, beans, bread, and meat preparation make all the difference. Sometimes menu items in one area look nothing like what you get elsewhere. I’ve been searching for rolled tacos for so long that I thought I would never see them again outside of San Diego. With the recent discovery of an Adalberto’s in NorCal, I realized that worlds were colliding.

Just as San Jose seems to be some weird way station in-between Southern and Northern California, Super Taqueria acts as a bridge between the two Mexican food styles. We walk in and are greeted with all the familiarities one comes to expect from California taquerias. The menu is dotted with all the essentials, but it is the rolled tacos that, as always, grab my attention. Could they be what I have longed for?

The Delta does strange things to men. Time may not behave quite like you once thought it did. The flow of the water through every pore of town washes away any preconceived notions. Up might be down. Savory might be sweet. Open might be closed, or even stranger closed might be open.
